WITH the bonus of games in hand, Walker Central went back top of the Premier Division. Paul Bennett’s side extended their unbeaten run to nine with a 1-0 win at fourth-placed Gillford Park and nudged out leaders Heddon thanks to Michael Cave’s first half winner in Cumbria.
Harraby Catholic are beginning to take their title defence more seriously and are unbeaten at home after their 3-0 win against Newcastle University. The Students have failed to win any of their seven games and lost 3-0. Alnwick Town have only a couple of draws in six recent outings. At Carlisle City, they lost 1-0 when Ian Cummersky netted.
Peterlee Town are on an improved run with their latest 3-2 victims visitors Northbank. Two previous winners of the Northumberland Senior Bowl – Shankhouse and Percy Main – were successful in this season’s first round. Shankhouse beat Premier Division colleagues Heaton Stannington 4-2, while Percy Main beat Seaton Burn 3-1. Stuart Taylor gave the visitors an early lead but the Villagers replied through Eddie George, Adam Batchelor and Wyn Fremlin.
Ashley McAlpine and Peter Southern were on target in Wallington’s 2-0 home win against Seaton Delaval. Blyth Town beat cup visitors Haydon Bridge United 3-0 and, with home advantage, Heddon edged out Cramlington Town by a single goal by Craig Scott.
Ashington Colliers beat Whitley Bay ‘A’ 2-0 at Hillheads thanks to goals from Mark Richardson and Dave Brown, while the other teams in the second round are Berwick United and Wark.
