Non-league round-up: Willington ousted out of Memorial Cup

Malcolm Pratt gives a round-up of the latest football action from around the North East

Non-league football action

Willington's involvement in the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup ended at Hall Lane last night when their Ebac Northern League Second Division opponents Darlington RA finished 3-1 winners.

The home side had the incentive of a 25th-minute goal from Evan Pinkney, who fired into the net following a cross by Chris Hardy.

Willington held the advantage until the first minute of the second half.

The home defence was culpable and Lee Harrington pounced to drive past goalkeeper Kyle Etherington from close range.

It continued to be nip and tuck before Darlington scored the second decisive goal midway during the second period.

Stephen Allison struck with a clinical finish, and although the home side continued to hold their own they were unable to force a breakthrough - and it was RA who scored again.

With only nine minutes left they were awarded a penalty for a foul and Nicholas Harrison made no mistake from the spot to just about confirm his side’s place in the third round.

Waterlogged pitches caused the postponement of the ENL First Division games between leaders Shildon and Guisborough Town and Crook Town and Newton Aycliffe.
