Ashington quickly got over the disappointment of going out of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday when they inflicted a rare defeat on West Auckland Town in last night’s Ebac Northern League First Division game.
The visitors, who had lost just once in 25 games, were sent reeling when Gary Middleton’s side scored three goals in 10 first-half minutes.
Kyle Oliver beat goalkeeper Jordan Nixon with a cross-shot and six minutes later Glen Taylor headed down an Oliver free kick and Andrew Johnson converted.
Kyle Downey and Darren Lough then combined for Glen Taylor to make it three.
Stephen Richardson reduced the deficit on 56 minutes but the Colliers hit back for Johnson to score his second goal of the night.
The win lifted Ashington into fourth place.
At the other end of the table Morpeth Town moved out of the bottom six with victory at Consett.
Stephen Anderson gave the Northumbrians a seventh-minute lead and it wasn’t until the 78th minute that Aristote Guerin Lakonga levelled but in added time, Jordon Fry claimed a dramatic winner and three crucial points for Morpeth.
It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show for Whickham who, after their heroics in the Vase on Saturday, were well beaten by Tow Law Town in the Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup.
Daniel Wilson, Shaun Ryder, Dean Thexton and Scott Thompson netted for the Lawyers with Liam Barnett on target for the Glebemen.
