BILLINGHAM Town sprang the shock result of the season in the Durham Challenge Cup when they defeated Dunston UTS by the only goal in last night’s Second Round tie on Teesside.
The Tynesiders were rocked on 15 minutes as the home side, who conceded seven goals at the weekend, went in front. A shot from David Onions was blocked and Glen Butterworth followed up to fire the rebound into the net giving goalkeeper Jonathan Carmichael no chance.
Spennymoor Town reached the next round when they defeated Sunderland RCA on Wearside. Mark Davison headed into his own goal on 72 minutes and almost immediately, RCA’s hopes receded when they conceded a second.
It was an outstanding effort by Keith Graydon, who fired a free-kick from outside the penalty area into the top corner of the net giving goalkeeper Lee Owens no chance.
Esh Winning went nap in the all-STL Northern League Second Division tie against Seaham Red Star.
The home side held out until the 35th minute but then leaked goals to Stuart Thompson and Chris Smith.
There was no respite in the second period as goals flowed from Craig Coates, Mark Moon (og) and Smith.
In last night's other tie, Consett won 3-2 at West Auckland after extra-time.
