Gateshead have replaced former Sunderland striker David Rush with Darren Caskey as No 2 to manager Gary Mills.
Ex-Tottenham, Reading and Notts County midfielder Caskey, 39, had been assistant-manager at the re-formed Ilkeston FC.
Rush had taken over as the Heed’s caretaker-manager after the shock resignation of Anth Smith just one week into the season and has assisted Mills during his first few weeks at the club.
Mills said: “Rushy is a genuine and honest man which made it harder to break the news to him, but he understands these things happen and took it well.
“It is important I have the right backroom staff.
“I am here to make tough decisions and I believe this one is right for me and for Gateshead.
“I had the same number two, Darren Gee, for 17 years and now I am looking forward to a good partnership with Darren Caskey, who I had as a player when I was manager at Notts County.
“He is someone I have known for a long time. He prepares his teams like I do and we are on the same wave length which is very important.
“He has a strong background in both Football League and non-league circles.”
