Colin Cooper has told his Hartlepool United side they can match high-flying Scunthorpe – if they cut out their mid-week carelessness.
Pool were excellent at AFC Wimbledon but lost, which was in stark contrast to the scrappy win they dug out against York. Now the Victoria Park boss wants them to marry the two against the Iron.
“We have to try and mix what we did in the last two performances,” Cooper said.
“We want to be hard to beat like we were against York, but also show the belief to go and play our football like we did at Wimbledon.
“I want us to send the fans home happy, and I’m sure they were after last Saturday even though when I analysed that game afterwards I thought we were poor.
“I’ve watched that game back two or three times and we didn’t play well yet we’ve won 2-0, but then we then go to Wimbledon and pass them off the park and end up losing.
“It’s the way football works sometimes but we have to eliminate the individual bits that hurt us on Tuesday but still have the confidence to show that we’re more than a match for anyone.”
Cooper is set to hand loan man Jack Barmby a start after impressive cameo appearances against York and AFC Wimbledon.
He said: “The impact he made on Saturday was exceptional and he showed those little flashes again the other night.
“It’s just a question now of does he deserve a start? And, if he does, how we need to manipulate things formation wise to get him in.”
