HARRY Dunn was a happy man after Blyth Spartans comfortably beat Solihull Moors in the opening Blue Square North game of the season.

Dunn, who gave debuts to five players, said: "I thought we gave a decent second-half performance.

“The first 45 minutes were a little tepid with neither goalkeeper seriously tested, but gradually we got on top. In the end we were worth our three goals.

"Mark Bell was sound in goal and there were encouraging performances from Richard Pell, Simon Todd, Anthony Hulme and Andrew Wright who I had to replace with Jamie Poole for most of the second half. As time goes by the newcomers will be valuable additions to the squad.”

Pell was prominent early on especially when he released Robbie Dale with a defence-splitting pass, but the striker fired over from 30 yards.

Junior English came close for Solihull after being picked out by Carl Motterram but it was mostly Spartans. One raid involving Jed Dalton and Andrew Leeson ended with Chris McCabe's header being turned over by goalkeeper Daniel Crane.

Just before the break, Simon Todd almost celebrated his debut with a goal but his effort rebounded off the crossbar.

The deadlock was broken on 55 minutes when Blyth's adventurous play was rewarded.

Gareth Williams latched on to a free kick and curled the ball into the top left-hand corner with keeper Crane stranded at the opposite post. From then on it was all Blyth. Leeson hit the crossbar, Poole and Dale brought further danger to the visitors’ goal and Crane had to make another excellent save.

Blyth got their second when Todd marked his first game with a clinical strike. Dalton's effort was parried into the path of the Darlington on-loan player who slotting home.

Dunn's side got the third just before the end. Dalton was fouled just inside the penalty area and Dale made no mistake from the spot, easily beating Crane.
