All-rounder Tom Huggins proved to be Northumberland’s nemesis as hosts Suffolk took a 116 run first innings lead at Ipswich.

Huggins followed up his 155 with the bat on day one with eight wickets as Northumberland were bowled out for 292 in reply to Suffolk’s 408-4.

For good measure opener Huggins was unbeaten on 42 as Suffolk reached 77-2 off 31 overs at the close of play.

Northumberland started the second day on 87-1 and Karl Turner had moved on to 71 when he was bowled by off-spinner Huggins.

Jack Clark was then trapped leg before by Huggins for 27 which sparked a mid-innings collapse as the visitors lost three wickets for two runs.

James Carding and Tom Cant both fell to Huggins without scoring, Cant going first ball when he was out lbw pushing forward on the front foot.

Northumberland were wobbling on 171-5, but an 83-run partnership between professional Jacques Du Toit and captain Adam Cragg steadied the ship.

Du Toit hit nine fours and a six over long on in an innings of 68 before he was caught at short leg as Huggins continued to weave his magic.

Wicket-keeper Cragg, nursing an injured thumb, ran out of partners and was unbeaten on a top-scoring 74 when Northumberland were bowled out in the 78th over, Huggins taking 8-90.

While three batsmen made half centuries four failed to get off the mark but Northumberland soon made inroads the second time with the ball.

Justin Bishop edged a short ball from Callum Harding to Cragg and then Darren Robinson fell to another short delivery from David Hymers as Suffolk, now 193 runs ahead, scored slowly in the final session.
