Northumberland made a promising start to their first innings as they go in search of their first Minor Counties Championship win of the season.

Lincolnshire won the toss at South Northumberland’s Roseworth Terrace ground and elected to bat, recovering from the loss of three early wickets to post 325-9 in their 90 overs.

Northumberland could have fared even better as they had the visitors at 228-8, but Lincolnshire managed to add another 97 runs and still had one wicket left standing. But in reply, Northumberland ended the first day on 74-2, with opener Karl Turner on 36no.

North team manager Stuart Tiffin said: “I’m pleased with the way the first day went – we did pretty well.

“This is a young team with a couple of debutants and another couple of players who have only played once or twice for the three-day side.

“The only disappointment was that we had Lincolnshire at 228 with eight down and just couldn’t get those last wickets, which let them add quite a few more runs.

“But we’ve made a positive start to our innings.”

North took three quick wickets to reduce Lincolnshire to 66-3, with Turner, David Hymers and Mikey Craigs taking a wicket apiece.

But a fourth-wicket partnership of 62 between Luke Robinson and Jonny Cheer moved Lincolnshire forward, before Cheer fell for 28.

Daniel Freeman added 19, and Robinson forged another partnership with Alex Osmond worth 48.

North pro Jacques Du Toit eventually took the key wicket of Robinson for 70.

When Osmond fell, it looked like the end was night but the ninth-wicket partnership between Tom Brooks and Matt Carter – who ended on 50no – was worth another 61 runs.

North lost James Thompson for a duck and Cole Pearce (36) was the other man out as the home side batted for just over an hour at the end of the day.
