THE umpires put a sparse Lord's crowd out of its misery just after 4pm yesterday, when the first day's play between Middlesex and Durham was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

It is the first time the sides have met at the home of cricket since 2006, but they only got as far as tossing up.

Durham's Phil Mustard called correctly, and asked Middlesex to bat. But on-off showers denied their attack the chance to bowl at England captain Andrew Strauss. They will hope for more luck tomorrow.

See tomorrow's Journal for an interview with opener Michael Di Venuto about his Durham future.
