Young cricketers from Ireland and Scotland are to take on the best student cricketers in the North-East in a charity European championship at Longhirst Hall this week.

Leinster Cricket Union and Cricket Scotland will play the Northern Universities Student Club Community Cricket team (NUSC-CC Elite) in aid of Cancer Research.

NUSC-CC Elite, sponsored by Northern Rock, represents elite club cricketers from 10 academic institutions spread over the North. Scotland are represented by their Academy side while Leinster Cricket Union, arguably the country's strongest provincial side, represent the Irish.

The five-day championship sees all three teams challenge each other over the opening three days with the final on Friday. Thursday is dedicated to a Northern Rock Coaching Masterclass with Durham's Martin Speight, Neil Killeen and Callum Thorp.

The NUSC-CC Elite players will dedicate the week to raising awareness and money for Cancer Research, teaming up with Lesley Shield who is in the Newcastle-based `Race for Life' in July.
