Champs are on points mission

TYNEDALE are looking to get their title challenge back on track as they head to Annfield Plain.

The reigning NTSL champions slipped from top spot to third in Division A1 last weekend after losing at home to Lintz in one of only two top division games to beat the weather.

They were all out for 80 as they chased Lintz’s 129-9, with Lintz bowlers Gary Christie (5-37) and Graeme Clennell (4-16) doing the damage.

The win saw Lintz leapfrog into second place – and to make matters worse for Tynedale, Leadgate won the only other fixture played and that saw them go top.

Tynedale committee member Terry Darling said: “Despite the rain in the early part of last week, we got the game on and it was played in sunshine.

“But on the day Lintz bowled well and we batted poorly, so they deserve full credit for the win.

“We took four points – the same as if the match had been off because of the weather – but Lintz benefited most because their victory gave them enough points to go above us.

“And Leadgate played too, which was a surprise because the further east you go, the worse the weather seemed to be, but they won and deservedly went top.

“This weekend we have got Annfield Plain and we have to try and get back to winning ways.

“We should be pretty much at full strength again and that should be a help.”

Plain were the losers against Leadgate last weekend, falling just three runs short of Leadgate’s total of 170-8.

Second-place Lintz are at next-to-bottom Benwell and Walbottle tomorrow, while fourth-placed Swalwell are at bottom-of-the-table Percy Main.

In Division A2, only one game beat the weather last weekend and that saw Ryton strengthen their grip at the top of the table with a six-wicket win over Greenside.

Ryton are at mid-table Lanchester tomorrow, while second-placed Backworth are at home to fourth-placed Ponteland. Consett are third and they are at home to next-to-bottom Alnwick.
