Our story starts in Ireland in the 1850's where a young John Fitzgerald decided to make the move to Great Britain, more specifically Newcastle-upon-Tyne. John Fitzgerald was knighted in the 19th century in recognition of his services to Newcastle. Today the Sir John Fitzgerald head office remains in Newcastle city centre where the legend began. We are passionate about our business and proud to be local. Our business has always remained a family concern and family ties have been core to the continued success of the company.
Sir John Fitzgerald pubs have been an institution in the North East for generations but because they retain their individual uniqueness you may not necessarily realise they are part of our group. We believe our success in ensuring some of the most famous pubs in the region continue to thrive is that our service and our drinks are second to none.
Although we have some pubs that have been around for over 100 years, we are not afraid to develop our own new properties too! The Pavilion at Northumberland Park, Backworth a totally bespoke, spacious new Great Food Pub that is perfect for the customer of today, while still retaining the "home from home" feel that we are famous for.

Our Food Development Manager Darren Lawton is responsible for creating all of the dishes in our great food pubs and at Café Royal in Newcastle , his attention to detail, passion to deliver exceptional food with a vast and varied menu takes weeks of planning and tasting!Our menus boast a wide range of irresistible food, such as exquisite meat, rich game, freshly caught seafood and locally sourced vegetables. Each dish is delicious, so whatever you are in the mood for. With this variety comes exceptional service, value for money and top of the range, sumptuous food, every time. To achieve such great quality in our food, great chefs are essential. We have pushed the boundaries of quality pub food for years. Our high standards are maintained through our ‘Sir John Fitzgerald Chef School’.
This chef school not only enables our chefs to learn their craft, it ensures they continue to prepare the finest food to the highest quality on a consistent basis. The passion and panache of our chefs are ignited and their skills perfected. Like our pubs, each chef is a unique individual, and we encourage this individuality and the creativity it brings. Darren is extremely proud to see our teams being able to progress through the ranks before finally achieving head chef status.
Our commitment to high standards has led us to open our own bakery within Café Royal;our contemporary café bistro is a relaxing haven, a social hub where you can truly indulge your taste buds. Breakfast, morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea can all be enjoyed within this chic interior. Fused with Café Royals grand, neo classical façade, it makes this a truly special place,serving our customers freshly baked croissants, pastries, traybakes and cakes.
In the North East we have great produce on our doorstep and we are proud to use it. We do this because our local suppliers offer us the finest ingredients. Importantly, this also enables us to continue supporting our region and the local economy.
Our choice to use locally sourced food from the North East is an easy one, given the vast array of high quality meats and fish in the local area. Our chefs certainly go the extra mile in the kitchen; but we ensure the food they prepare travels no further than necessary. We believe that fresh food tastes better. The food that is placed in front of you is fresh, always.
