Whether it’s a work night out, a family gathering or a chance to get together with old friends, there are countless venues in the North-East where you can enjoy a fantastic night of fun, food, entertainment and dancing.

One option is to experience a more traditional Christmas at one of the region’s country house hotels or castles.

Longhirst Hall, Morpeth, for instance, has plenty of Christmas and New Year packages with special rates for guests wishing to stay overnight. Party nights priced at £29 per person and murder mystery nights at £45 are being held throughout December.

Both include a three-course meal with a choice of two starters, three mains courses and three desserts.

Festive lunches and dinners are available Monday to Saturday in the Boyson Restaurant.

The lunch package is £16 for adults and £8 for children (or sample Santa’s carvery lunch on Sundays from December 2) while the dinner is £24 or £12.

On Christmas Day you can relax in an adult environment with gentle live piano music in the Boyson Restaurant at £55 per head or bring the family to the Court Suite to enjoy lunch, with a visit from Father Christmas at £50 per head for adults and £25 per child.

Finally, Longhirst Hall will be holding a New Year’s Eve buffet with live entertainment in the Court Suite (£60) and a disco in the Boyson Restaurant (£40). To book, call (01670) 791348.

The Britannia Hotel at Newcastle Airport is offering a good range of Christmas and New Year parties, dinners and accommodation deals. Incredible value Christmas lunches are available through the week at just £6.50 each, or bring the children to meet Santa for Sunday lunch at £15 (adults and £7.50 (children).

Christmas party nights with three-course meal and disco cost from £14.95 per person, or enjoy cabaret with Tokyo Rose at £27 each.

The hotel has really pulled out all the stops for New Year’s Eve with a gala party night including bucks fizz reception, five-course dinner, entertainment with live band and disco plus one night’s accommodation – all for £105 per person.
