SCA is one of the region’s most dynamic manufacturing businesses, producing the popular house-hold toilet roll brand Velvet, and manufacturing tissue products for leading supermarket chains including Asda and Costco – as well as commercial washroom products sold under the Tork label.

The Mill has recently benefited from a series of investments that have seen the building of a revolutionary computer-controlled international distribution centre, state-of-the-art production lines and a string of environmental upgrades.

SCA was recently acclaimed as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for the seventh consecutive year. The company is one of only two Europe-based companies to achieve this accolade and one of just nine companies that have been honoured by the Ethisphere Institute in this year’s consumer products industry category.

The Ethisphere recognition highlights companies that go above and beyond making statements about doing business ethically and actually translate those words into reality.

As a part of its ethical commitment, SCA puts a strong focus on achieving global sustainability goals set out in the company’s newly-published 2014 Sustainability report and has already achieved some targets one year early.

Such achievements are in line with the company’s philosophy of caring for its people, industries, agriculture and the eco-system.

SCA Prudhoe Mill is a key strategic asset for the Swedish owned hygiene and forest products company and regularly wins awards for its manufacturing performance and environmental strategies.

As a global company, with some 44,000 employees worldwide, SCA places a great deal of emphasis on sustainable growth and investment.

The company operates a committed investment programme for its employees. Everyone involved in the business from apprentices and graduates to senior management are encouraged and given support to continually develop their skills.

Father of two, John Priest, from Blyth, was snapped up by SCA when Rio Tinto closed its Aluminium Smelter at Lynemouth in South East Northumberland in 2012.

John was a Senior Engineer in the Smelter’s Casting Plant and is now using his manufacturing expertise as an Area Engineering Leader at Prudhoe Mill, where he leads a 50-strong team that work in crews of 8 on a 24/7 shift rotation.

John is responsible for guaranteeing the performance and delivery of all the maintenance and resource support connected to the manufacture and production of company’s flagship Triple Velvet Tissue brand.

By the time he moved to SCA he was already highly qualified with over 25 years’ experience. He started his career as an electrical apprentice aged 16, gained a degree in Engineering and Manufacturing and was in the middle of a degree in Electric and Electronic Engineering at Northumbria University when he was made redundant.

When John joined SCA, they continued to support his studies and he went on to achieve a first class degree with honours. The company also put him through the SCA Management Accelerator Programme (MAP).

Suffice to say that John has never looked back.

“Moving from aluminium smelting to the paper making industry was a big change but when I joined SCA I knew I’d made the right move immediately.

“From day one the company has been incredibly supportive, they aren’t just seeking to fill vacancies, SCA takes a long-term approach, that’s shaped around the individual as well as the needs of the business, investing in my development and offering genuine career progression. I also work with a great team of people and there’s a real sense of family and solidarity, says John.”

Sarah Juliff, from Guildford in Surrey relocated to the region in 2011 to join the company’s Graduate Accelerator Programme, which typifies SCA’s commitment to inspiring and training the engineering leaders of tomorrow. The dedicated two-year development scheme creates important new employment opportunities for talented university leavers and is designed to develop their technical and leadership skills.

A graduate in Chemical Engineering from Manchester University, Sarah completed the SCA Graduate Accelerator Programme last September and is now a rising star in the business as a fully-fledged Process Engineer.

She works as part of a 12 strong team responsible for quality control, technical performance and energy usage on the Mill’s Triple and Quilted Velvet paper making machines. She also provides operation and maintenance support.

Describing why she loves life at SCA, Sarah said: “The field of papermaking was completely new to me when I left University. My previous work experience was office based in equipment design, so what really attracted me to SCA was its strong focus on technical and operational skills. It’s given me the opportunity to use what I’ve learnt at University in a practical way.

“SCA has been incredibly supportive investing in my career. They’ve helped me to develop personally as well as professionally and at the same time offer me a genuine career progression plan. I’ve been involved in several on and off-site projects and attended various training courses which have helped me progress to my current role.

“Since I moved to the region I’ve met some fantastic people. Relocating here was a big step, but it’s been worth it. The North East is a beautiful part of the world with coastlines, countryside and lively cities like Newcastle to explore.”

Katie Hilton, SCA HR manager, says: “The age range at Prudhoe Mill is 17 to 70 years. Experienced employees, many of whom have spent their entire working life with SCA, have a wealth of knowledge and skills which would be lost upon retirement.

“We are 100% committed to our continuous investment programme in staff and facilities to safeguard business continuity and sustainable growth which is why we are always seeking to recruit and grow talented, capable individuals like John and Sarah, with a passion for manufacturing, who will help us to remain cost effective and fit for business in a very competitive market place.

“In return, our people receive an excellent rate of pay and have access to world-class training, development and career prospects with Europe’s leading tissue manufacturer.”

SCA Hygiene is the largest consumer tissue company in the UK and Ireland with seven manufacturing sites and over 1,800 employees.17.82m or 67% of UK households bought SCA branded products last year. *Kantar Worldpanel Market Research.
