For Aileen Brewis, her stunning barn conversion in Penshaw, Tyne and Wear, couldn’t enjoy a better location.
She likes nothing better than relaxing with a cup of coffee, watching the horses trot past her beautiful stone-built home. But she also loves the fact she can be shopping in Newcastle city centre within half and hour.
The fantastic location prompted she and husband Chris to buy the property seven years ago.
Aileen said: “It really is location, location, location. It’s a wonderful countryside setting. We have a riding stables at the end of the lane so the horses clip clop past which is lovely. We also have great views across the farmland down to the river.
“But on the other hand, we’re literally two minutes away from the A19. It’s perfect for those who love the great outdoors, but also perfect for people like me as I can be in the middle of Newcastle shopping in 20 minutes.
“I can be at the Tyne Tunnel in less than 10 minutes which is great for people who work in North Tyneside.”
The house is part of The Granaries, an impressive development in Offerton Village. With countryside views and traditional features, the family home really does offer the best of both worlds. The couple have updated the property adding new bathrooms, kitchen and utility.
A stunning stained glass frontage allows the light to pour through. There is a double height hallway with cloakroom, as well as a cosy lounge with beamed ceilings and wood burning stove. The family room has French doors leading to the back garden, and there is also a study and utility.
The kitchen is a firm favourite with Aileen.
She said: “The kitchen is fantastic. I love to cook and it’s got an Aga. Everyone who comes into the house just loves the kitchen. It really is the heart of the home and everyone congregates there. We’ve had some fantastic parties as all the rooms flow around each other. Christmas is spectacular.”
Upstairs there is a master bedroom with en suite and dressing area. There are three further bedrooms and bathroom with free standing bath.
The house is brimming with unusual features.
“The window sills are about 3ft wide and there are lots of beams. I have a little study area in the hallway. There’s nothing nicer than sitting at your desk with the light streaming through,” said Aileen.
There are lawned gardens at the front and back, with patio and water feature. There is also a double garage/workshop.
“The house is on a private road so it’s very quiet. It’s also a real sun trap the back garden. There’s nothing nicer than sitting there with a cup of coffee. Chris loves the huge double garage. He likes to use it as his workshop,” Aileen said.
Now that the couple’s children have now flown the nest, they have decided to downsize. Their daughter Catherine, 30, lives in Chicago and is expecting their first grandchild in June. Their son David, 27, works down south.
“It’s very much a family home, so we’re looking for a smaller property. We will be spending a lot of time flitting across the pond to visit our new grandchild. I’ll miss the kitchen and the magnificent views from our bedroom. We also have lovely neighbours and there’s a nice
“The location is its best selling point. You feel like you’re in the country, but you’re just minutes from the centres of all the major cities.”
