The Journal Opinion: Proper structures needed

The Journal Opinion for January 7 in which we argue that an affordable, national pre-school nursery system should be introduced

That as many as one in five parents are effectively working for nothing because of the cost of child care is a situation which is as unsustainable as it is wrong.

Working mums and dads already face uniquely region-centric problems here in the North East. And these cannot be overcome without the help of central Government.

Surely it is time the Education Department started to look at the lot of the nation’s children in the round.

One thing that would help would be more, and better paid, jobs here in the North East, where wages tend to lag behind the national average.

But, if the economy is to grow and prosper, we need a long-term commitment from Government to come up with an affordable and properly structured pre-school nursery system for the nation’s young.
