The Journal Opinion: Never mind the announcements, where's the guarantee?

The Journal's opinion column for December 3, in which we welcome Government spending plans, but ask for all parties to commit to the schemes involved

Another day, another Government spending announcement as next year’s election draws nearer.

Yesterday we were told that £46million will be spent on new flood defences to protect thousands of homes across the North East.

That news followed Monday’s announcement that £640million will be set aside to dual further sections of the A1.

Both schemes will be confirmed in the coalition’s Autumn Statement today. They are welcome developments, of course, as the people of this region have suffered greatly with flooding, while the need for substantial improvements to the A1 is an argument well and truly won.

What we need now, however, is a commitment that, whoever emerges victorious at the ballot box come May, the schemes – or similarly agreeable ones – will go ahead.
