The time has long gone since the Bigg Market was the strongest lure for those in search of a great night out in Newcastle.

Sure, there are still some good venues. But the rival charms of Collingwood Street, the Quayside and the Gate have left the Bigg Market behind. The empty former KFC and Pizza Hut outlets at the top of the street hardly help.

As Sean Bullick, chief executive of business improvement district company NE1 delicately put it, the Bigg Market has been “failing to add value to the city for years.”

That should change soon. The Bigg Market has a lot going for it. Not many streets of its size can boast 31 listed buildings, for a start. Now a Heritage Lottery grant should pave the way for a major revamp eventually worth £2.9m.

Newcastle has many vibrant attractions. It is time the Bigg Market rejoined their number.
