Today's the day. Or – let’s be cautious now – today might be the day. The day we take a giant step towards seeing the A1 in Northumberland dualled.

In a speech to the CBI in London today, the Prime Minister will set out how the first-ever long-term Roads Investment Strategy will be unveiled. As part of that strategy the Government is pledging to tackle some of the most notorious and long-standing problems on the road network.

Among six problems highlighted are three of key interest to us in the North East: the A1 north of Newcastle, the A1 Newcastle-Gateshead western bypass and trans-Pennine roads in the north of England.

The detail must wait and we should hear more today. But we are entitled to get our hopes up. At last, this really could be the start of something.
