Guy Readman left an incredible legacy to North East charities.

The businessman who created and ran successful companies across the region donated £2.5m to the Readman Foundation which will help worthy causes and be administered by the Community Foundation.

It is an astonishing gift from an astonishing man.

But this should not be his only legacy.

For when the terminal illness which tragically afflicted him became too much, Mr Readman decided to act decisively and ended his life at the Dignitas Clinic in Switzerland.

It was a choice he was able to make - but one which is denied to many others.

Would he not wish another legacy would be that our law makers examine the entire issue surrounding our suicide legislation?
