Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is urging Berwick people to vote Lib Dem to avoid a right wing ‘Blukip’ coalition winning power.

The Liberal Democrat leader says a vote for Julie Porksen, his party’s candidate in the in the key Northumberland marginal, could be decisive in keeping a right wing Tory-DUP-UKIP alliance from together clinching the keys to Downing Street.

A poll in 2014 by Lord Ashcroft showed Ms Porksen neck-and-neck with Conservative Anne-Marie Trevelyan, but other candidates, including the Greens and Labour, are also campaigning hard for votes in the area.

Mr Clegg was pitching to potential Lib Dem voters in Berwick, and 19 other marginal constituencies in the UK where the party has a chance of victory next month.

He said: “Imagine what Britain could become if the Prime Minister had to bargain with Nigel Farage and his friends for votes.

“Our public services cut to the bone. Our communities divided. Our shared British values of decency, tolerance and generosity cast aside.

“Instead of Liberal Democrats holding the balance of power and using it to keep the Government in the liberal centre ground, Nigel Farage and his friends in the Conservatives and the DUP would drag Britain further and further to the right.

“So ask yourself this: Do you want Liberal Democrats to keep the Government in the centre or Nigel Farage and his friends forcing David Cameron to lurch to the right?”

But Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Tory candidate for the seat, hit back at claims the Tories would lurch to the right and insisted her party leader David Cameron is not planning for another coalition.

She said: “We are fighting to win a majority at this election.

“If voters want their next Government to be committed with both practical plans and track record of success for new and better jobs, fiscal rectitude and the chance to vote in an EU referendum, then they need to vote Trevelyan in Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency.”

It also comes after months of speculation about Labour going into coalition or a ‘supply and confidence’ arrangement with the SNP.

Mr Clegg, however, claims a ‘Blukip’ deal would be worse for the country.

He believes the deal would see the Equalities Act scrapped, benefits scaled back and more privatisation of schools and health services.

He added: “There is a right wing threat to Britain. Who holds the balance of power in Britain the morning after polling day matters.

“The only people standing between BLUKIP and real power are a small number of Liberal Democrat candidates.

“The only way to get a stronger economy and a fairer society is to vote Liberal Democrat on May 7th.”
