A young mum this afternoon confessed to killing her own baby in a blaze at their Tyneside home.
Danielle Wails had claimed masked raiders tied her up then started the inferno which cost four- month-old Alexander Gallon his life.
But the attack she described never happened.
And now the 22-year-old has pleaded guilty to infanticide as her trial was about to begin at Newcastle Crown Court.
She denied murder and prosecutors accepted her plea after doctors con firmed the balance of her mind was disturbed by post natal depression when she set the fire in August last year at the flat in Cowgate.
Alexander Gallon was the innocent victim in the obsessed mother’s plan to get attention from her ex- boyfriend, Robert, the child’s father.
Paul Sloan, QC, prosecuting, told the court: "It is accepted the balance of her mind was disturbed."
