Woman, 77, hit by motorcycle dies in hospital

Police are appealing for witnesses after the smash on South Hetton Road, Houghton-le-Spring

An elderly woman who was hit by a motorcycle has died from her injuries.

The accident happened at 12.14pm on Tuesday, May 20. Police were informed of a collision on South Hetton Road, in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear, involving a motorbike and pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 77-year-old woman, was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Police have now confirmed that the woman died in hospital. Officers said the woman’s next of kin have been informed to and the woman’s identity will be released in due course.

There were two people on the motorbike, the rider and passenger, who also needed hospital care.

They were both taken to hospital by road and were released after some treatment.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Officers are continuing to carry out inquiries to establish what happened and are asking any witnesses to contact them.”
