It is still neck-and-neck as a competition to secure £1m-worth of advertising at Heathrow enters its final hours.

Having lost the lead yesterday in a vote to win three months-worth of advertising at one of the world’s busiest airports, the North East has today edged back ahead of Northern Ireland.

But the competition is still far from over and the region still needs your votes.

The Facebook poll, which also features the Midlands and the North West, draws to a close at midnight tonight and the winner will be announced shortly after.

Sarah Stewart, chief executive at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “The whole region has rallied behind the competition today – there has been a great response and a tremendous last push to secure a win which would see the North East promoted throughout Heathrow Airport for three months.

“Businesses and organisations across the area have been actively promoting the competition and as a result we have seen our lead extend over the course of this morning.

“There is a great sense of pride and clear recognition that £1m worth of free advertising at one of the world’s busiest airports would provide a significant boost, profiling the region to potential visitors and investors from around the globe.

“The competition doesn’t close until midnight and at this stage we can’t afford to be complacent.

“We need to maintain the momentum and keep encouraging everyone to vote, by liking the image of Hadrian’s Wall on Heathrow Airport’s Facebook page, and to share and shout about the competition right throughout this evening.”

In the lead this morning with 11,763 votes is the North East while Northern Ireland is not far behind on 10,396.

The North West and the Midlands are some way off the lead with votes of 1,484 and 884 votes respectively.

Some 13 million passengers use Heathrow as their gateway to Britain each year.
