IT has helped put Newcastle firmly on the fashion map – and now the region’s biggest catwalk event is now officially open. The suave and sophisticated are gearing up to turn out in force for NE1’S Newcastle Fashion Week.

It officially launched last night with VIP guests and fashionistas attending a Mercedes Benz showroom for a music and catwalk show and the city’s first exclusive car bootique.

Designer handbags and shoes from Cruise were on display in the boots of some luxury Mercedes cars.

Now in its third year, the fashion event will be spread over eight days.

It will feature catwalks, events and shopping at venues across the city including the Northumbria University Graduate Fashion Show on Tuesday at the Baltic, and a Royal Wedding bridal fashion show at the Theatre Royal on Friday.

Newcastle’s answer to The Clothes Show live, the first ever to be held in the city, will kick off proceedings today and set the tone for the week-long event.

The former Clothes Show presenter and ID editor Caryn Franklin will host the first catwalk shows at the University, while Company magazine editor Victoria White will join a panel of experts for an industry talk on taking the first step on to the fashion ladder.

Ollie Locke from reality TV show Made in Chelsea will take over the presenter duties tomorrow.

And other guests include fashion blogger and internet entrepreneur, Poppy Dinsey and Donna Air’s sister Francesca, who will be showcasing her latest collection at NE1’s Fashion Front Row event at As You Like It restaurant in Jesmond on Wednesday.

Newcastle’s best-dressed gentlemen and ladies will also be revealed during the week, while prizes will be up for grabs.

For the past week fashion scouts have been scouring Northumberland Street and Eldon Square in the city to unearth stylish people of all ages.

Towie star Lauren Pope, is also excited about the event. She will make a guest appearance tomorrow when she will meet and greet visitors and co-host a Stilletos, Stockings and Sparkles catwalk show for sponsor Nikki Lissoni jewellery at Northumbria University.

Lauren, who shot to fame in The Only Way is Essex, will then attend the closing party on Friday.

The 29-year-old said: “Newcastle is a great city. NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week will be fantastic and I’m really excited about being there with Nikki Lissoni and presenting their show on May 12.”

Pictures will be uploaded to NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week Facebook page with the public encouraged to ‘like’ their favourite with the top 10 judged by fashion industry experts. Last year saw Vivienne Westwood store worker Jessie Corner from Newcastle crowned the winner.

Sandra Tang, organiser, said: “We are delighted to have all our celebrity guests on board.”
