Two North East landmarks are the best in the country

Durham Cathedral and Cragside House have been ranked in the top 10 landmarks in the country

Two North East landmarks are among the best in the country.

Durham Cathedral and Cragside House and Gardens in Northumberland, have been placed in the top 10 of best landmarks in the UK.

In the Travellers’ Choice TM awards, announced by TripAdvisor, Durham Cathedral was ranked fifth, while Cragside House picked up eighth place.

Melanie Sensicle, chief executive of Visit County Durham, said: “It comes as no surprise to me that Durham Cathedral has received this recognition from TripAdvisor.

“The cathedral has received several accolades over the last few years, and this cements its reputation as one of the UK’s most popular and beautiful buildings. The fact that the recognition comes from the general public is really important to us.”

Royal Yacht Britannia, in Edinburgh, Scotland, picked up first place in the landmark category and the Houses of Parliament, in London, was awarded second place.

Other landmarks to make the list included the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, and Liverpool Central Library.

St James’ Park, in London, was also named the best park in the country, while Hyde Park followed in second place.

James Kay, of TripAdvisor, said: “With schools breaking up for the summer holidays in a matter of weeks, these attractions will serve as a great must see and do list for families – especially as many of them can be enjoyed for free.

“London cements its reputation as a city of fantastic parks with five award wins – only Paris and Moscow scored as many award winning parks. But for the UK’s best rated landmark you have to look outside the capital to Edinburgh, where the Royal Yacht Britannia has claimed the number one spot for the first time.”

The Travellers’ Choice awards honour top travel spots worldwide based on the millions of valuable reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers.
