Two injured in A1 crash

TRAFFIC came to a standstill today after four vehicles crashed on the A1.

TRAFFIC came to a standstill today after four vehicles crashed on the A1.

The collision happened just after 9.50am close to the Washington Services on the southbound carriageway.

The vehicles involved were a Vauxhall Corsa, a VW Golf, a Toyota Avensis and a white van.

The southbound carriageway was closed for an air ambulance to land.

The A1 was closed in both directions and traffic was diverted.

A 38-year-old man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital suffering from whiplash and another male in his mid 30s driver was taken to the Queen Elizabeth II hospital, Gateshead, with minor injuries.

The female driver of the van and two females in the VW golf were uninjured.
