TV weatherman Fred Talbot has been charged with a string of sex offences, including against a boy in Newcastle.

The former teacher has been charged with nine offences of indecent assault and one serious sexual assault against five alleged victims.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said four of the alleged victims attended Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, in Manchester, and one was at a Newcastle school.

Six counts of indecent assault relate to one alleged victim at the North East school, police said.

The offences, involving up to five victims, three of whom were under 16 at the time and two under 19, allegedly happened between 1968 and 1983.

The serious sexual offence charge relates to an offence against a former pupil of Altrincham Grammar School for Boys where Mr Talbot was a biology teacher in the 1970s to 1980s.

Nazir Afzal, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “We have carefully considered all the evidence gathered by Greater Manchester Police in relation to allegations from five complainants that Fred Talbot sexually assaulted them between the 1960s and 1980s.

“Having completed our review, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr Talbot to be charged with 10 sexual offences relating to five complainants, three of whom were under 16 years of age at the time.

“The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Fred Talbot with these offences.

“This decision was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors and our guidance for prosecutors on sexual offences.

“May I remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Talbot have now commenced.

“He has a right to a fair trial and it is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could prejudice these proceedings.

“For these reasons, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this time.”

The 64-year-old will appear before Manchester Magistrates’ Court next month. He was charged after he reported to Bury Police Station yesterday afternoon.

Talbot, of Bowdon, is best known for his work on the ITV programme This Morning in the late 80s and 90s when it was hosted by Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan.

He was also the weatherman on ITV’s Granada Reports but has not appeared on the show since the claims emerged.

He was first arrested in April last year.
