A pair of thieves were caught in the middle of the River Wear yesterday after swiping a rowing boat.

The boys stole a wooden boat from the riverside in Sunderland at about 4pm.

Twenty minutes later an anonymous 999 call was made urging the emergency services to help the youngsters, who became stuck in the water near to the Wearmouth Bridge.

They managed to make their own way to safety and climbed to the shore but were later arrested.
