A TALENTED young football player has died after being knocked down in a hit-and-run road tragedy.
Gary Edgar suffered fatal injuries while crossing the A1 Western bypass in Gateshead around 12.25am, on Saturday.
The 16-year-old was knocked down between the Hollinside interchange and the B6317 Swalwell slip-road by a small silver car, possibly a Vauxhall Corsa, which left the scene.
The teenager, from Cromwell Avenue, Winlaton, Gateshead, died from his injuries at Newcastle General Hospital yesterday morning.
Last night his family was too upset to talk about the tragedy.
The teenager, who was a student at King’s Meadow School, Dunston, was a keen footballer and played for Blaydon Youth Club. He was due to play in yesterday’s league game against Ryton Football Club which was called off as a mark of respect.
Last night his coach Phil Little said Gary would be a “big miss” to the team and that the club’s thoughts were with his family.
Mr Little said: “Gary is at the forefront of the lads’ minds at the minute and our thoughts go out to his family. He was a very straight lad and will be a big miss to the lads. The news has been devastating.”
Next door neighbour Dane Bousfield, 19, a warehouse worker, said the news had been devastating to the community.
He said: “ “I knew he was a good footballer and he supported Newcastle United. He will be a big miss.”
Another neighbour added: “It’s very upsetting and our thoughts go out to his family. It’s just terrible that something like this can happen.”
