A teenager was last night charged with murder after the stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in a crime-ridden area of Tyneside.

Apprentice mechanic Mark Smith, 16, was stabbed in the neck with a knife as he walked home in Newcastle's West End on Wednesday evening.

He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital with neck injuries at about 11.30pm but later died. Police sealed off Elswick Road where the attack happened as well as a stretch along to Caroline Street which was cordoned off for forensic experts to work at the crime scene. Also last night, a second person, a 20-year-old Newcastle man, was arrested on suspicion of murder and is helping police with their inquiries.

Mark had been given an Asbo in the past but his family described how he was turning his life around and had just landed his dream job. Locals also spoke of an increasing culture of knife crime in the surrounding streets.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with Mark's murder and will appear at Newcastle Magistrates Court this morning.
