Officers recovered cannabis resin worth £3,500 and 200 Ecstasy tablets worth £1,000. A man and a woman in their mid-20s were arrested and bailed.

Two favoured

A SURVEY of council tenants in Blyth Valley has resulted in massive support for the creation of two separate all-purpose councils in the event of unitary local government being introduced in Northumberland.

More than 1,500 tenants responded to the consultation exercise, of which 92% favoured the option of setting up one unitary authority for Blyth Valley and Wansbeck and a second covering Berwick, Alnwick, Tynedale and Castle Morpeth.

Only 8% of respondents gave their backing to the option of a single "super council" for the whole county in the Blyth Valley Housing management company survey.

100% pass

ALL students in Northumberland who sat this year's exams in traditional music, organised with Trinity Guild Hall College, have passed, several gaining top grades.

Northumberland County Council is the first music service in England to pioneer the exams through Trinity Guildhall. The second year of the pilot scheme saw 20 students, including three adults, enter on the Northumbrian pipes, fiddle and accordion.

Bathroom fire

A BATHROOM was destroyed by fire early yesterday. Firefighters were called to a three-storey block of student flats at Leazes Parade, Newcastle, just before 3am where they found a fire in the shower unit. By the time the flames were extinguished the bathroom was gutted and the rest of the flat was 25% damaged by smoke.

Road closes

FINCHALE Road in Hebburn, South Tyneside, will be closed on Sunday for essential maintenance works to the surface.

The road will be closed from 7am to 5pm and a diversion will be put in place.

Man dies

A PEDESTRIAN killed as he crossed a dual carriageway in County Durham has been named.

Michael Stephen Hilton died on Friday after being hit by a vehicle on the A68 at Darlington. The 54-year-old is said by police to be from the Bransholme area of Hull.
