Anime fans and gamers turn out in costume for SunnyCon

Sunderland anime and gaming convention sees fans dressed to impress at Seaburn - and one even popped the question

Colour and character descended on Seaburn seafront as the third annual SunnyCon arrived in Sunderland.

SunnyCon is the UK’s fastest growing anime convention and attracts fans of the Japanese animation style from across the country - many dressed to impress as their favourite characters.

And one gamer even used the event to pop the question to his costumed girlfriend. She accepted his wedding proposal to rapturous cheers and applause.

The week-long convention, held at The Pullman, began at the weekend and attendees were entertained by panel talks, exhibitions, demonstrations, competitions, food, and gaming.

The best costume was celebrated in the Sunnycon Cosmic Parade at the end of Saturday’s programme.

The convention also raises funds for several charities, this year nominating Macmillan Cancer Support, Aid for Japan, and local charity, Sunderland Pride.
