Sporty Spice Melanie Chisolm was on Tyneside yesterday in preparation for this year’s race.

The pop star was at Gateshead International Stadium training her recruits for the 13.1-mile run from Newcastle to South Shields.

She is heading a team of athletes from the region taking on a North vs South charity challenge.

The Northern team’s aim is to beat their Southern counterparts, led by former Olympian Iwan Thomas, over both the Great North Run and then the Great South Run in October.

Both celebrities were tasked to formulate a 20-strong team by Vodafone JustTextGiving, the official donation partner of the Nova, which manages the Great North Run, to raise as much cash as possible for good causes.

Mel said: “I am here because I’m very, very excited to be running the Great North Run this year.

“The facilities here at Gateshead International Stadium are wonderful and it is great to be here to train my team for the Great North Run.

“This is something I have always wanted to do because the Great North Run is the biggest and best half-marathon in the world.

“We are challenging the southern team to show once and for all who is the best.”

She added: “Northerners can have a reputation for being tight with their money, but I’m going to prove that kind of thinking wrong by raising much more money than Iwan and his southerner friends.”
