A North schoolboy has blown the competition out of the water to win a national powerboat championship.

Luke McGill, of Mayswood Road, Fulwell, Sunderland, has only been driving the powerful craft for two years after being coached by his father Gerard, 46, who runs a nautical shop and is a keen sailor.

St Aidan's Roman Catholic Comprehensive School pupil Luke posted a winning lap time 13 seconds ahead of the rest of the 15-strong field to win the eight to 12 age group prize at the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship on Saturday.

The youngster won his club - Sunderland Yacht Club - an inflatable rib power boat which they plan to use as a training safety boat.

He said: "I want to say a huge thanks to my Dad for practising with me in Sunderland Harbour, twice a week, in the run-up to the final."

His mother Dawn, 46, a bank clerk, added: "Everything he does is on the water, and we are so pleased that he managed to win the competition."
