Police confirm body found in River Wear is missing student Sope Peters

Durham Police have confirmed that a body found in the River Wear is missing Durham University student Sope Peters

A body found in the River Wear has been formally identified as missing student Sope Peters.

The body of the 20-year-old was discovered by a member of public on December 8.

Emergency services were quickly at the scene and recovered the body using a dinghy.

Sope, who was in his second year of an economics degree at Durham University, was last seen in Klute bar on Tuesday, October 29, during a night out with friends.

He was last captured on CCTV on the steps down to the river at Elvet Bridge just after midnight and officers have previously said they believed it was likely the well-liked student had gone in to the water.

Durham Police confirmed the body was that of Sope today.

An inquest will be opened on Thursday.
