A scheme to install traffic lights on a busy road junction in the North will start next week.

Work on the project at the junction between the A19 and the A194 in South Tyneside aims to cut the number of accidents.

Work will be carried out overnight, when the road will be reduced to a single lane, and is due to last four weeks.

Jobcentre hit

FIRE has destroyed an air conditioning unit and smoke-damaged several rooms at a Sunderland jobcentre after a motor overheated. Crews from three stations were called to the three-storey building in St Thomas Street in the city centre shortly before noon yesterday.

Policing talks

ACTING Superintendent Gillian Mitchell will meet residents at Newburn Community Centre on Park Road in Newburn, on June 13 at 7pm to discuss plans for the future policing of the area.

Fairtrade film

A FREE film show is being put on by the Co-op to highlight fairtrade issues in the developing world. The film Black Gold - which follows the general manager of the Oromia Coffee Farmers Co-operative Union in Ethiopia as he tries to save 74,000 coffee growers from bankruptcy - is being shown at the Empire cinema at The Gate in Newcastle on June 21. Bra clinic

A NEW service supplying breast cancer patients with underwear has been launched at Nuffield Hospital, Newcastle. Former lingerie sales consultant Susan Cooper has opened The Bra Clinic, with monthly sessions being held at the hospital.
