ELSWICK Harrier Ryan McLeod ran off his excess Christmas turkey in spectacular fashion yesterday by winning the Woodlawn Special School’s Christmas Pudding Fun Run 2007.

With an impressive time of 16 minutes and three seconds, Ryan completed the three-and-a-half mile run before tucking into a well-deserved Christmas pud from sponsors Evans Easyspace.

Ryan, 22, said: “I was delighted with my time. I came second last year behind Nick McCormack who came second this time, so it was good to reverse it.

“It’s a great event and I’ve been taking part for quite a few years now. It’s good to get a run in after Christmas Day’s excesses, and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to next year’s race now.”

The annual event, held at the Links in Whitley Bay to raise funds for the Monkseaton school, attracted a crowd of around 700 who took part in or supported the race.

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell started proceedings, jointly organised by the school’s Parents’, Teachers and Friends Association and the North Shields Polytechnic Running Club, for the 11th year running.

He said: “I love doing it every year and it provides a great opportunity to run off the festive excesses in the name of a great cause.”
