A motorcyclist and his passenger have suffered serious injuries after a crash in County Durham.

Police accident investigators say a Peugeot 106 was turning across Etherley Road in Bishop Auckland when it was involved in a crash with a powerful Honda bike. Both the rider and his female pillion passenger were thrown from the machine into the road.

Both suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries. The road was closed for two hours and both injured people were taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Open day

Spring clean-up

A JUNK amnesty organised in Bishop Auckland has proved popular.

The spring clean of the Woodhouse Close area was organised by Wear Valley District Council and Groundwork West Durham and proved so successful that it will be followed by a similar event in the Douthwaite Road area.

£3,000 boost

NURSERY nurses and health visitors in Tynedale have secured a £3,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

The money for the Northumberland Care Trust will help to address infant mental health issues and promote emotional well-being for children and families in Tynedale, with information and support being made available for families experiencing anxiety or trauma.

Travelshop shut

THE Nexus Travelshop at North Shields Metro station will be closed this weekend while it is re-painted.

It will close on Saturday and re-open at 10am next Monday.

Busy weekend

BERWICK Tourist Information Centre dealt with 1,282 inquiries over the Easter weekend - a rise of 250 compared with last year.

A spokesman for Berwick Council said that accommodation bookings were virtually the same as last year and that a large number of tourists praised the high quality of the new Holiday Guide for the area.
