Marks & Spencer has widened its offering of Fairtrade cotton this week.

You'll find it used for men's and women's jeans at £35 and T-shirts and underwear from £8. M&S Fairtrade cotton from India and Mali means producers have been paid a fair price and had money invested in projects such as schools, health centres, fresh water wells and nurseries. Available from M&S, Northumberland Street, Newcastle, and MetroCentre, Gateshead.

EVANS has also gone ethically aware with its first 100% organic cotton T-shirt collection.

There are two to choose from in ivory and aqua with "Save the planet" printed above a heart-shaped illustration of the world. The cotton is grown without the use of genetically modified seeds, synthetic pesticides or insecticides and harvested without the use of defoliants. Available in sizes 16-32 for £14 from Evans, Northumberland Street, Newcastle, and MetroCentre, Gateshead, or online at

A NEW range of "green" face and body care products called Nature Girl is now available in this country via website

No synthetic fragrances or dyes are used. Instead, old-fashioned methods are used, such as refining through paper filters and the use of natural clays. All the ingredients are organic or "wildcrafted". Check out the full range - which isn't tested on animals - on the USA site and you'll find a range of stockists in this country. But Lovely Organic has the widest range available.

The I Am Green Cinnamon Bark Extract Face Mask with added tea tree oil and I Am Earth Tea Tree and Lavender Face Mask, rich in French green clay, are both £21, while the I Am Flower Linden Blossom Face Mask with shea butter, aloe vera and sea algae extract is £24.

HERE'S something to look forward to in early September. RI2K is launching an exclusive pink handbag in support of the forthcoming Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

It's a gorgeous limited edition saddle-bag soft calf leather style at £110, with £20 going directly to Breast Cancer Care to help fund their research and support projects. Available from Fenwick and John Lewis, both in Newcastle, Debenhams, MetroCentre, Gateshead, and branches of Collectables.

THIS layered T-shirt from Rohan, £35, looks like a pretty regular summer top with a pretty floral print.

But it is made from Dynamic Moisture Control polyester and stretchy elastane. It's perfect for active use in hot climates and is used by adventurous types on action holidays. But it is also good for winter use as a base layer.

A good all-year-round investment then. Available in sizes small-large in eggshell blue, carob and sage from Rohan, Eldon Garden, Newcastle, or mail order on (0870) 601-2244,
