Fashion lovers across the region were squealing with delight at the news Vivienne Westwood was to open a standalone store in Newcastle. Hannah Davies finds out what we can expect.
While other cities have Harvey Nichols or Selfridges, packed full with designer goodies Newcastle has remained resolutely free of big-name designer infiltration.
There are labels available at selected stores such as Cruise, Newcastle; Jules B, Jesmond, or Van Mildert in Durham, but no full-scale collections available.
So there was more than a little shock when Vivienne Westwood announced she was going to get in there before all others with a standalone store in Newcastle's Hood Street.
Newcastle's fashion lovers will be able to buy Westwood's Gold Label and Red Label available as well as fabulous accessories there, for both men and women.
Gold Label is the higher end of Vivienne's label.
This season she created drama dressing her Gold label woman as "a gift to unwrap", declaring; "She is a rich American heiress looking for a husband. She is Western Pioneer. She is a Walt Disney character. Bright, fantastic colours are complemented by sombre blacks, providing a stark contrast between good and evil, endearing heroines and repulsive baddies."
Autumn / Winter 2007, which will be available in the new store, looks equally as dramatic with chunky deconstructed knits combining with classic Westwood cuts.
The colours are golds, greys and navy with splashes of dramatic yellow, pink and orange.
Bold African prints with plaid and flowing dresses.
It is a classic Westwood collection with drama, romance and fire, and it will be made all the more exciting for being able to buy it right here in the North-East.
The reason people love Vivienne Westwood so much is because her clothes are exciting, classic and dramatic and always absolutely desirable.
Vivienne Westwood is opening at 1 Hood Street, Newcastle in October.
