Purls of winter wisdom

Don’t be a big knit, get one! Lisa Haynes has the low-down.

THIS season, knits aren’t only big on the fashion front, they’re jumbo in size. Rejoice at the onset of cold weather – if there’s one winter warmer you have to invest in to keep cosy, it’s a chunky knit. Cardigan, jumper, dress or accessories, the fashion world’s gone wild for the woolly stuff.

Chuck out the fine knits and twee twin sets, oversized and super-slouchy is the way forward this season.

But big knits don’t have to hide your silhouette – and they can still be sexy. Quirky actress Chloe Sevigny recently funked up her chunky sweater dress at Paris fashion week with a Chloe ankle boots and clutch bag combo.

Fiona Huntingford, founder of www.stylestruck.com, has this advice for taming chunky proportions: “You must keep the rest of your look slim and if possible wear a waisted belt to give some definition,” she says.

“Also, make sure the knit doesn’t finish at the widest part of the body – a mid-thigh-length cardigan suits most shapes. Petite figures should be careful with this look to avoid looking ‘drowned’.”

Pick out a super-knit this season and get the trend all sewn up.
