A possible sighting of missing Janis Hall has led police to extend their search to a small Northumberland village.

Officers leading the hunt for the 65-year-old, who hasn’t been seen after leaving her Catton home, near Hexham, on December 19, are now issuing leaflets in the Simonburn area following new information from a member of the public.

Someone has come forward to say they picked up a woman in their car near Simonburn, at around 5.15pm, on Saturday, December 21, and dropped her off at Hexham railway station.

The woman is described as wearing a long black or dark coloured coat with a hood and stated she was going to Lancaster.

Detectives have carried out subsequent checks of CCTV at the station. However, the woman described does not appear on it and therefore didn’t board a train at that time.

Now police are hoping the leaflets may trigger someone’s memory of seeing the woman or encourage the woman passenger herself to come forward so it can be established whether it was Mrs Hall or not.

Mrs Hall is described as being 5ft 4ins tall of medium build, with grey short hair, and wearing glasses. She was also possibly wearing a green fleece coat, black trousers and a black fur Russian-style hat.

Superintendent Mick Paterson, from Northumberland Area Command, said: “We have received and continue to receive several reports of possible sightings of Mrs Hall from members of the public which we’re extremely grateful for.

“We have been following lines of inquiry around this particular report since it was made but hope the leaflets will encourage anyone with information or the woman who was picked up and dropped off to come forward.

“It’s now almost three weeks since Mrs Hall went missing and her family remain understandably distraught by her disappearance.

“Our searches are continuing around the village of Catton and surrounding areas.

“I would urge anyone who has seen Mrs Hall, knows where she is, or has any information they feel may help us to locate her, to contact police straight away. “

Police have been scouring the Northumberland countryside since Mrs Hall vanished three weeks ago and at the weekend they were seen searching the River East Allen. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191.
