A passenger died in a crash with a lamppost following a police car chase in County Durham.
Adam Parker Wilkinson, 49, from Consett died when the car he was travelling in collided with a lamppost following a short pursuit by police.
Just after 11.50pm on Monday night it was reported that two men were behaving suspiciously near to the Tesco Extra store on Genesis Way, Consett. It was believed the men were in a black VW Bora Sport, which had driven off from the area.
The vehicle’s details were circulated and within minutes the car was spotted by a local response officer in his Vauxhall Astra who indicated for the VW to stop.
The car failed to do so and the officer pursued the vehicle. A short time later, at 12.02am, the vehicle was found to have crashed with a lamppost containing power cables as it headed down Ebchester Bank, close to St Mary’s convent.
Mr Wilkinson was confirmed dead at the scene. The driver, who is believed to be aged in his thirties, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with what are thought to be minor injuries.
The road was closed to traffic until 6am yesterday.
Durham Constabulary has referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. The IPCC is expected to decide in due course whether it will carry out its own investigation.
Anyone who may have seen the VW Bora on the roads in Consett on Monday night is urged to call Durham Constabulary on the 101 non-emergency number and ask for the collision investigation unit.
