Hundreds of families descended on a North-East park yesterday to spend a fun-packed day knocking their artistic aspirations into shape.

The 21st annual Family Sculpture Day, in Saltwell Park, Gateshead, saw adults and children pick up hammers and nails to create a work of art.

Many also picked their way along a new sculptor train, spanning the park's farthest corners.

The event, in The Grove, again proved one of the most popular events in the region's arts calendar, following last year's draw of around 1,000 people.

This year's theme was Our World, marking the 2006 Festival of World Cultures.

In all 14 artists also created pieces for the Install Sculpture Trail, which will remain on site for visitors to the park until November.
