One of the North East's most expensive properties sells for a 'knock down' £3.25m

It is snapped up for less than half its original £6.75m asking price when it was first put on the market in 2012

A house which boasted one of the North East’s highest price tags of £6.75m when put up for sale was eventually bought for a ‘knock down’ £3.25m.

Runnymede Mansion in Ponteland, Northumberland, went on the market in April 2012 and generated a huge amount of interest.

One rumour suggested Cheryl Cole was a potential buyer.

Set in three acres of grounds, it included a terrace, veranda, summerhouse and natural pond, it certainly had the X Factor.

The building which covers 21,000 sq ft, has 35 rooms, a cinema, a swimming pool in the shape of a clover leaf, a nine car garage, £200,000 oak skirting boards and even a high capacity Champagne cooler.

It was put on the market through Sanderson Young estate agents whose managing director Duncan Young said at the time: “It will be bought by somebody who wants the best that the world can provide in modern housing and the best luxury you can buy.

“It is extremely rare for a house of this quality and grandeur to be built anywhere so its introduction to the market is guaranteed to attract international interest in one of the great modern homes in England.”

It eventually was sold for less than half the original asking price in April this year.

Runnymede Road on which it is located is where Toon legend Alan Shearer has a home and has long been dubbed ‘millionaires row’.

And today it is living up to its name with a host of seven figure properties currently up for sale there.

In all there are 11 mansions - as well as six plots of land - up for grabs for prices ranging from £1m to £2.75m which, if added together, comes to a cool £27m.

There are also a further four properties advertised for sale by local estate agents on the Rightmove website at just below the seven figure sum, three at £950,000 and another at £995,000.

If added to the asking price of the seven figure properties it would come to a total of £31m, twice the annual £15.6m salary of Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.
