A Northumberland councillor is recovering in hospital after a serious road collision over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Gordon Castle, who represents Alnwick for Northumberland County Council was involved in a crash between a motorcyclist and a car on the B6341 in South Charlton, Alnwick, at around 2.30pm on Friday, August 22.
It is unclear at this stage whether Coun Castle, who is a keen motorcyclist, was on his bike at the time of the crash or the driver of the car.
Coun Castle, who also works at Barter Books in the town, is a popular and active member of the community and many residents have sent well wishes for him since the crash on Friday.
Stuart Manley, who co-owns Barter Books with wife Mary, said: “Gordon was due back at the shop at 3pm on Friday to interview a prospective new employee but he did not turn up which was very unlike him.
“At 3.30pm we heard of an accident between a car and motorcyclist and we got very worried at that point.
“It took us quite a while to find out if it was Gordon for sure, the police confirmed there had been an accident and people had been taken to the RVI by air ambulance but we still did not know if it was Gordon but we were getting very worried.
“My wife called his wife Liz the following morning and then we knew for sure. We are still waiting for further updates on his condition. He has broken many bones and is in a serious condition but not life-threatening.
“Gordon is obviously a councillor and very active throughout the community. Everyone is sending their best wishes.”
His wife Mary added: “He has been a long-time staff member, highly valued.
“He is such a popular person here, he does a lot for the town. He is the son of Alnwick, I think his family have lived here a long time.
“He is very much liked and has worked for us a long time. We are really anxious about him.”
Fellow Alnwick Councillor Heather Cairns said she was shocked by the news.
“I am very concerned for his well-being and shocked that such an experienced motorcyslist could have an accident. It just shows how dangerous the roads are.”
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman confirmed officers were called at 2.30pm on Friday to reports of a collision between a car and motorcyclist.
“At 2.30pm on Friday, police received a report of a collision involving a car and a motorbike on the B6341 in South Charlton, Alnwick,” she said.
“Four people were taken to hospital, two with minor injuries.”
