AMULTI-TALENTED North East student has been shortlisted for a major competition run by a global broadcasting brand.
Christian Cargill has made it to the final 20 of MTV’s Student of the Year contest, which recognises the nation’s most passionate, inspiring and ambitious students.
The 20-year-old, who lives in Jesmond, is in his second year of a philosophy degree at Newcastle University and is a big character on campus.
As well as being a presenter on Newcastle Student Radio, Christian is a member of the National Youth Theatre, the marketing director of a new student business and a regular on the stand-up comedy circuit.
If he wins the public vote, Christian will spend this summer on a paid work experience placement at MTV’s London headquarters.
He said: “This is one of the most incredible opportunities to get experience in the media industry whilst still at university.
“MTV is one of the biggest global broadcasting brands around and to be a part of it this summer would be an absolute dream.
“It’s amazing to have been shortlisted to the final 20 and it’s great to have so many different facilities available to me here at Newcastle, which have really helped me get shortlisted.”
Christian is now canvassing support to enable him to make the top five of the competition.
MTV said it chose Christian because “he’s proactive, hardworking and positive”.
It added: “Christian’s world is his oyster. When he’s not acting as marketing director for a start-up food and beverage company called Jam Jar, he’s either planning content for his own uni radio show, attending theatre and comedy stand-up societies or presenting for his university TV channel.
“Christian’s been very active on the charity scene raising money and supporting charities such as Cancer Research, Leukaemia Research and Brake, and he was part of his student union’s RAG team.”
Christian presents The Charming Man Show on Newcastle Student Radio, which was nominated for best newcomer at the Newcastle Media Awards, and he’s starred in six plays with the theatre society.
In the near future, he plans to direct a music video in Berlin.
He said: “Working at MTV this summer would be a dream, for it will be a chance to put into practice everything I know, give me the opportunity to offer my ideas and drive, and show how I already take full advantage of student life.”
Voting ends on Sunday, June 9. To watch Christian’s pitch video and to vote for him you can visit the website http://studentoftheyear.mtv.co. uk/student/christian-cargill
