A man aged 40 has been charged with attempted murder after a social worker was stabbed last week at a County Durham school for children with special needs.
The woman, 36, was attacked shortly before a pre-arranged meeting about a pupil at Glendene School, Easington Colliery, on Friday. Her alleged attacker will appear before North Durham Magistrates today.
Police last night named a Darlington man strangled to death over the weekend.
John Jackson Morrison, 45, was found in his home in Trafalgar Terrace, in the Brinkburn Road area at midday on Saturday.
A 39-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Spill shuts road
Motorists were diverted yesterday following a petrol spillage on a major road.
The south bound lane of the A195 near its junction with the A182 in Washington, Wearside, was closed from 12.20pm to 1.50pm while fire crews worked to remove the spillage.

Northumberland residents will be able to find out how to reduce their fuel bills at a family-fun day in Morpeth this weekend.
The Clean Green Energy Dream Day has been organised by Northumberland County Council and will showcase technologies which can help reduce bills.
There will also be children's entertainers, a synthetic ice rink and a falconry display on October 28, 10am to 4pm at County Hall.
Northumberland County Council mobile information unit will be in the tourist information car park in Amble from 10am until 2pm on October 27.
On November 2 it will be in Bedlington market place from 10am until 3pm and on November 10 in Morpeth's leisure centre car park from 10am until 3pm.
